核廃絶に託した伝言
A message from Numata Suzuko-san

再会は、この世と天国を隔ててだった。

厳しい日差しが降り注ぐ中、傾斜がきつい階段を上る。

広島市の丘りょう部に広がるキリスト者の墓苑にたどり着く。

When I met Numata Suzuko-san last time was after her leaving to the heaven.

In the mid of severe sun shining day, I went up to the steep stone stairs on a mountain hill in Hiroshima.

There are graves for Christians.

Numata-san is now resting there.

この一角に、「戦を知らぬ世代に、命の大切さと平和の尊さを伝えるため、黙してはならない」と、死の直前まで被害のありのままを伝えた原爆の語り部が眠る。
While she was alive, she kept urging ‘Importance of Peace’ and persuading a lot of people that we should not be silent when people’s lives become to be treated lightly and easily gotten rid of. 

She had continued to tell people who don’t know the War.
 “What kind of terrible things will happen in the Wars.”

She kept being as a Testimony Teller of A-bombed until very close to her death.

爆心地から約1.4キロの旧広島通信局で被爆、建物の下敷きになり左足を切断した。

22歳の結婚前だった。
 When A-bombed, Numata-san was 1.4km away from the H.C., where Hiroshima telecommunication building was located.

Immediately after the bombing, the building  had been crushed and she was stuck under it.

Finally she could get outside, but later she had to have her left leg cut off due to the injury.

Numata-san was 22 years old then, and it was before her marriage. 

5年前(2010年）、老人ホームでお会いした。

対面中も横になっておられたが、平和のかけがえなさを説く口ぶりは、話せば話すほど、熱を帯びた。
5 years ago（2010), I met her when she was in a nursing home.

She was lying on the bed.

But once she started to talk about peace, she become full of energy for telling about it.

その折、「伝言」を託された。

原爆を落とした米国のオバマ大統領に宛ててだ。

「核廃絶を言ってくれたが、ここにきて、真実を知ってください。未来に生きる子供たちのために。」
Then she gave me a message.

It says,

“To President Obama, Please come to Hiroshima for children in the future.”

Because he had a famous speech in Prague one year before.

その1年あまり前、オバマ氏はプラハで演説した。

「核を使用した唯一の国として行動への道義的責任がある。核兵器のない世界に向け、具体的な方法をとる」と。

沼田さんはその実現を念願し、ならば、オバマ氏に原爆被害の実相を理解してもらおうと、広島訪問を求めたのだ。

私はその想いを受け、2010年8月18日、当時担当していた本紙夕刊のコラム「素粒子」に「伝言」を掲載した。

So I received her will and message, and I wrote about it in my column.

翌年3月の東日本大震災は、満身創痍だった沼田さんに、さらなる打撃を与えた。

福島原子力発電所の事故で、放射性物質が大量拡散したことに心を痛め、同年7月12日、87年の生涯を終えた

Next Year (2011), the Japanese Great Eastern Earthquake and Fukushima NPP's accident happened.

Three nuclear reactors have exploded and meltdowned one after another.

She knew huge amount of radiation spread took place as well.

That must have given her a big stress.

Next year, in 2012, Numata-san passed away on July 12^th in her age of 87.

So the message Numata-san asked me was put off.

世界で一万5千発を超える核兵器の廃絶は、遅々として進まない。

それどころか、後退しているようにさえ見える。

オバマ氏がプラハで約束した包括的核実験禁止条約の批准は米議会内に根強い反対があり、滞ったままだ。

同じ核大国のロシアは、今年3月プーチン大統領がクリミア危機に際し、「核兵器の使用を準備した」と威迫してみせた。

その、約2か月後に米国であった核不拡散条約（NPT）の再検討会議は、最終文書が採択されずに決裂している。

広島・長崎の名前は知っていても、苦しみの強さと長さを正視できないから、我が事として考えられないのだろうか。

それでも変化の兆しもある。

広島・長崎の平和式典に、オバマ政権で核軍縮・不拡散政策を担うゴットメラー国務次官(Ms. Gottemoeller)やキャロラインケネディー駐日大使(Ambassador Kennedy)が参列した。

In 2015, Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Specialist, Ms. Gottemoeller and Ambassador Kennedy  participated Hiroshima Memorial Ceremony.

来年5月の主要国首脳会議（伊勢志摩サミット）に先立って、外相会合が広島市で開かれる。これに出席する可能性があるケリー米国務長官は、ケネディー氏らの参列に対し「誇りに思う」と評価した。

しかし大統領周辺には賛否両論ある。

20年ほど前、原爆投下を自省的に見ようとしたスミソニアン航空宇宙博物館の計画が、退役軍人や議会の反発で、広島、長崎の被爆資料の展示は排除されるなど大幅変更へ追い込まれた。

被爆地訪問は、米国の政治家の難所だ。

「それでもオバマさんが来られたら、私が原爆のことを話します。」
Then I met Shinoda-san.

She said to me, “So, I will tell him.”.

そう語るのは篠田恵さんだ。

沼田さんの高校教師時代の教え子で、自らも被爆者。

遺志を引き継ぎ、語り部として体験を伝え続けている。

父母は米国カリフォルニアで園芸業の会社を立ち上げ、4人の兄妹たちは米国で生まれ育ち、米国市民権も持っていた。

しかし、原爆は容赦なく、彼らゆかりの人々の命も奪った。

篠田さんも、爆心から2.8キロで被爆し、姉の一人が行方不明に。

2歳の弟は2か月後に亡くなった。

Numata-san was a teacher in the high school that Shinoda-san went to.

Shinoda-san also has an experience of A-bombed, and now telling her own story.

Actually her father and mother had started their business in California and 4 of her brothers and sisters were raised in U.S.

A-bomb dropping have sacrificed many lives indiscriminately, even

against those who had some relations and roots in United States.

Shinoda-san was 2.8km away from the hypocenter, and her elder sister become missing and younger brother had died 2 months later.

恩師、沼田さんの墓石には、「信」「望」「愛」の3文字が刻まれている。

「人の理性を信じ、核廃絶の望みを捨てず、敵をも愛し続けよ。」

篠田さんら後に続く人に呼びかけているように思えた。

Shinoda-san’s teacher, Numata-san’s Grave has Three Letters on its surface.

“信 Belief ” “望 Hope” and “愛 Love”.
