死を覚悟の10代、焼野原に衝撃　元特攻隊員　和田功さん

太平洋戦争中、江田島で訓練していた時に原爆が投下され、広島市内に救援に向かった部隊があります。

「陸軍船舶練習部第10教育隊」。

「海上ていしん戦隊」とも呼ばれ、船に乗せた爆雷もろとも敵艦へ突っ込み、本土に上陸しようとする相手の船を沈めるための特攻部隊でした。

命をささげようとした隊員の運命を変えたのは、原爆投下でした。

訓練は中止になり、被ばく覚悟で街中に入り、けが人の救護と、遺体の運搬に当たります。

During the last sever fighting war days, Wada-san thought that “To die for own Nation” was his  'destiny', however the A-bombing changed his 'destiny'.

終戦を迎え命を取り留めますが、焼野原で見た光景は、今なお隊員の脳裏に焼き付いています。

Soon after the A-bombed, the war ended and Wada-san saved his life, even though, the scenes what he saw of his own eyes in Hiroshima town at that time were unforgettable forever for him.

かつて基地があった江田島北部の幸の浦には慰霊碑が立っています。

きれいな海を挟み、広島の対岸に1967年に建った碑は、戦闘に参加した2288人のうち1636人が亡くなったと刻みます。

Eda-jima (江田島）was the place where the last Kamikaze pilots trained during the final days of the Second World War.

There was a cenotaph for the pilots.

1,936 pilots among 2,288, who had left from this island 'Eda-jima',
as Kamikaze Pilots and they lost their lives.

救援に加わった隊員には戦後放射線の影響に苦しむ人もいました。
Among those who went to aid to Hiroshima town, some of them later had suffered the radiation influence.

「特攻」と、被爆直後の「救援活動」という二重の困難を経験した生存者から、証言を聞きました。

“Before A-bomb”, trained as a Kamikaze Pilot , 
“After A-bombed”, for working  as a life-saver, 
Wada-san had been to Hiroshima town.

Actually what happened to him on those days, 
I listened carefully to Wada-san’s story.

広島市中区で理髪店を営んでいた和田功さん（91）は、海上ていしん戦隊の元隊員です。

Wada-san’s(91) home was running a barbershop in Hiroshima Naka ward.

当時は

「鉄砲の弾に撃たれるよりも船で突撃して死んだ方が男らしい」

と自らの役目に誇りを感じていましたが、原爆投下直後の市街地で信じられない光景を目にします。

Young Wada-san joined Japanese military and had been trained as a Kamikaze pilot every day.

In those days,

“I did not want to be shot to death. Rather I myself want to attack directly to enemy's ship. It would be honoring  and manly.”

I thought like this….

However Wada-san watched unbelievable scenes when he went to Hiroshima town immediately after A-bombed.

老いた今、

Now getting old,

「戦争は殺し合い、やってはいけない」と口を開きます。

Wada-san says clearly,

“War should never be fought if we have such terrible weapons.

These weapons should never be used against people, again!”

陸軍に志願後、ていしん戦隊に入ったのは1945年2月。

香川県の小豆島で、全国から集まった若者と銃の使い方や船の操縦方法など、基礎的な指導を受けました。

7月に江田島・幸の浦の基地に移り、訓練を始めました。

燃料がなく沖に泊まった船を敵に見立て、ベニヤ板で造った船で向かい、爆雷を落とす練習です。

船は大きい波を受けるとひっくり返るうえ、海水につかった部分は腐りやすい構造。

「骨組みの上を歩かないと壊れやすく、手入れがかかせなかった」と振り返ります。

同じ兵舎にいた隊員約千人のほとんどは20才未満の青少年。

訓練の厳しさに夜中に泣き出す年下もいました。

8月6日、19歳だった和田さんは朝食後に兵舎の中で休憩していました。

August 6 1945, Wada-san was 19.

Wada-san was resting after his breakfast in a training room.

突然

Suddenly,

「ドーン、バリバリ」という大きな音が響き、建物が揺れました。

急いでソトに出ると、広島市上空にきのこ雲がもくもくと上がり、地面から火事による煙が湧いているように見えました。

A big “Do..…ng” heavy sound heard outside,

Then the rooms and buildings near around had been shaken.

Quickly Wada-san got outside.

What he saw was a huge mushroom cloud rising up.

It looked like fire pillars and smoke coming from its own ground.

その日予定されていた訓練は中止、部隊は順番に船で、江田島から市内へと救援に出動しました。

 Training on that day were canceled.

And Wada-san’s training group left from Eda-jima,

in order to become  aid staffs for victims of A-bombed.

和田さんは午後2時ごろ、宇品港から市内に入りました。

部隊の救援本部が臨時に置かれた広島電鉄本社（現中区）へ徒歩で向かいました。

Around at 2:00 o’clock, Wada-san entered Hiroshima town from U-jina （宇品）port.

He and his group member went to the military head quarter office in Naka-ward, that is the place of Hiroshima Electric Railway Co.'s Head quarter office, as well.

道の両脇の家々がごうごうと燃え、真中を歩いて火の粉をよけます。

御幸橋に立った時驚きました。

街がなくなり、己斐まで見通せたからです。

The houses on road sides were fiercely burning,

Wada-san had to evade the flares and powder of ashes while walking.

When Wada-san stood in the middle of Miyuki-bridge（御幸橋）,  

he was really surprised

The whole Hiroshima town was disappeared!
He could see Koi（己斐） area in far away from that point.

むしろと棒で即席の担架をこしらえ、けが人を移しました。

In first, aid staffs made carriers out of straw mats and sticks for moving bodies.

And they carried a lot of injured.

夜は路地に横になりましたが、気が動転し眠れなかったそうです。

At night, Wada-san lied down, but he could not sleep because of seriousness and nervousness.

7日、遺体をトラックの荷台に挙げる作業などをして、8日は元安川近くで遺体を焼く任務をしました。

On 7^th,

Wada-san and other aid staffs moved many dead bodies on trucks.

On 8^th,

They cremated a lot of another dead bodies on the river beds close to Motoyasu-river.

材木の上に遺体を並べ、また材木を載せて遺体を積み重ね・・・。

They put dried woods and then bodies,

Then again putting dried woods and bodies, repeatedly…..

あまりの悲惨さに、どんな爆弾が落とされたのか見当がつきません。

Those scenes were too terrible to imagine, 
Wada-san had no idea on what  kind of bomb that was…..

「兵隊さん、水をください」

という負傷者にも多く出会いました。

「どうせ死ぬのだからと、水を飲ませた」と明かします。

“Please give me water….Sir….”

Many injured, Wada-san met, said to him,

so Wada-san gave them water actually.

12日まで救援で、江田島にいました。

Wada-san stayed Eda-jima until August 12^th as an aid staff for Hiroshima town.

仲間は髪の毛が抜けたり、歯茎から血がでたりしましたが、和田さんは1週間下痢をした程度で治まりました。

Among those who entered after A-bombing suffered various symptoms like hair loss or bleeding in gums, however, Wada-san only suffered from diarrhea for a week.

出撃をしないまま戦争が終わり「ほっとした」と本音をのぞかせますが、心中は複雑でした。

Wada-san had no chance to fight as a Kamikaze Pilot, "but honestly to say, I was relieved...not to fight..", Wada-san said to me.

焼野原で見た多くの人の死を思い出し、

「核兵器は人類の破滅につながる」。

Reminding of a lot of dead bodies’ cremation on the devastated Hiroshima ground,

“These type of weapons will lead the extinction of human-beings!”

被爆72年を迎える夏を前に、そう力を込めました。

Wada-san persuaded me by saying like this,
